Crew Member Reveals Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the edge of outer space.

The group of women also included experts in multiple disciplines.
