Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Group

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of personalities, and a thrilling plot including celestial beings, evil spirits, and sinister influences expanding in power within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the latest installment of this adventure follow below.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

The latest chapter concluded with a huge suspense moment and presented the first table of characters who will separate from the central cast to begin their separate journey, distinct from the other two tables.

This warrior group features Teor (played by Travis), Thimble (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that having everyone at one table would be unworkable.

This explains, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, connecting the individual narratives before branching into three separate parties: Warriors, Strategists, and Questers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

Per the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for players who prefer a classically intense fight-heavy gameplay experience where non-violent answers are scarce.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might look unsuited, but the developments of the third episode make it clear why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the party understands precisely where to go next after a violent opening clash with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose death initiated the narrative’s action—used the enemy for his own means, entering Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the character, and stealing all the enchanted items to auction.

Casimir then settled his debts and escaped to a secure base in the remote area, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to exit the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the companion and best friend, wants retribution.
  • Kattigan is familiar with Timmony and advises that it is a hostile location.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having defied his house’s orders to eliminate the target and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their status as important members in the powerful family could assist the group access areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, Teor swore a life debt to The savior for his deliverance and will now go with him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that govern the city for a range of causes, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and The cleric betrayed House Halovar and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the clan.

This means them few options but to head to Timmony in search of Casimir.

What’s Next?

From the latest episode’s follow-up content, we discover that the combat party won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight participants to round up the Questers and Strategists tables.

Viewers can anticipate discovering which characters will be where in the story’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on next week.
