Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and stated they should be taken into custody and punished "with execution" following their publication of a controversial video.

The Recording That Triggered the Controversy

The video footage, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who previously worked in defense or defense capacities.

"Like us, you all swore an pledge to defend and support this constitution," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation don't only come from overseas, but from within our own country. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can refuse illegal orders, you should refuse improper directives. No one has to carry out orders that violate the law or our founding principles."

The Former President's Furious Reaction

The clip seemed to trigger a angry reaction from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another publication, he stated: "This constitutes really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders Answer

Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership published a joint announcement censuring the statements.

"Political violence has no position in this nation," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all acted our nation with great patriotism and distinction. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and harmful threats of violence against congressional representatives, and call on House Republicans to strongly do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the security of these officials and their families."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme online messages and withdraw his aggressive language before he gets someone killed," the statement added.

Officials' Defiant Reaction

The representatives who participated in the video also published a response.

"We identify as veterans and national security professionals who love this nation and took an oath to protect and support the national charter of the United States," they stated. "This commitment continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred obligation."

"What's most telling is that the president views it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the statutes," they continued. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they fulfill their pledge to the constitution and obligation to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."

They continued: "Every American must come together and denounce the president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a period for moral clarity."

Further Partisan Responses

The Opposition leader also censured Trump's comments and posted on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is calling for the capital punishment of public representatives."

He added: "This represents an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, all citizens – regardless of party – should denounce this without delay and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very risky, you have prominent officials of Congress advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that's without precedent in American history."

The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and determine all that."

Executive Branch Reaction

During a executive branch meeting on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary replied: "No."

"Let's be clear about what the president is reacting to," the spokesperson said. "You have active officials of the federal government who conspired to organize a video message to personnel of the American armed forces, to current military personnel encouraging them to defy the executive's proper directives."

She said: "The purity of our military depends on the command structure, and if that structure is compromised, it can cause fatalities, it can cause disorder, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are basically promoting."
