Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become starving," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
