Israelis have gathered around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
The national leadership delayed state commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the plan.
A prominent delegate familiar with the negotiations said that an evening round of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.
The source said the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have still not produce any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to narrow the disparities between the two sides.
In the city's memorial area earlier, young a woman - whose sibling survived the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released not a single person will feel safe."
"After we see all home again, we can breathe again. Then we can start to heal," she added.
In front of the leader's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be living.
Demonstrator one woman explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to be released. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that approximately seventy percent of the population prefer the conflict to conclude in return for the freedom of the abducted.
At the site of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.
From that location, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli shelling carried on.
In the urban center, bombardments were documented in the early hours of that day in the western district, Rimal and locality areas and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"Once the evening falls, the anxiety appears with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli air strike last year, described.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, especially my smallest child who puts his head on me all night."
"Continuously we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."
The medical facility in Gaza City said it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis reported two more dead people had been brought there. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the southern area, medical staff said.
