Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was âupbeatâ during their recent conversation.
âThat gives me comfort, is that heâs in good spirits,â Glenn stated on Wednesday. âHis wife and his kid, theyâre in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.â
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
âDonât know just yet,â the coach said. âHowever, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. And again, thatâs what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.â
Authorities shared surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts âa tonâ since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.
âMy initial concern, he has a new baby,â Glenn noted. âMy mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
âThere is a procedure involved, that I wonât detail, but Iâm happy at the fact that heâs going to come out of this thing really, really well.â
Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
âHeâs been a part of what weâre doing,â Glenn stated. âI mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, heâs done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.â
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houstonâs squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
