NY Launches Portal for Public to Submit Immigration Footage After Arrests of Four US Citizens

The state AG has introduced a recent digital platform encouraging residents to provide images and footage of ICE operations across the state. This move comes just a day after a significant ICE raid disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking widespread protests.

American Citizens Arrested During Raid

A lawmaker announced during a news conference that four US citizens were taken into custody and kept for "almost a full day" following the previous day's operation. Protests broke out in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"All New York residents is entitled to exist without intimidation," the AG wrote in a release.

"For those who saw and documented federal operations recently, I encourage you to submit that evidence with us. We are pledged to assessing these reports and investigating any violations of law."

Submission Process

The platform offers options to upload images and video footage of the operation, along with a section to indicate geographic details. When submitting, submitters must tick a checkbox that acknowledges that "the attorney general may use any evidence provided in a public document, such as in a legal proceeding or public report."

Details of the Chinatown Raid

The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say included dozens of government officers, occurred in a well-known neighborhood of NYC where counterfeit products and merchandise are regularly available en masse – often to visitors.

Videos of the incident show numerous covered and weaponized personnel zip-tying and detaining a man, and pushing back onlookers. Masses of residents followed the officers through the streets. An armored military vehicle was noticed moving along the city streets.

Leadership Statements

During a midweek briefing organized with the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a lawmaker, announced that four nationals were detained by ICE for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be taken for unjustly." He clarified the citizens were released on the following day with no accusations made.

"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman stated. "This is a armed campaign to incite tension. It is merely a justification to generate turmoil for this administration to bring in the troops to stop violence that they have created."

Extensive Outcry

Anger over the immigration operation quickly spread – every NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the raid, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Repeatedly, the federal government selects oppressive displays that instill panic, rather than security. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate wrote.

NYC immigrant rights groups spoke out also.

"ICE targeted Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, masked agents and protective equipment to go after small merchants attempting to earn income. This action had no connection to community security and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and communities," said the president of a advocacy group.

ICE Policies

ICE policy forbids the arrest of American nationals and the agency has said it does not take into custody American nationals. Yet, independent reporting has found that more than 170 citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the beginning of the current administration.

Recent Pattern

Immigration operations have been becoming more common in NY and across the US recently.

A recent action in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an housing center of the existing leadership. Demonstrations opposing immigration enforcement are widespread along with allegations of aggression and inhumane treatment.

Latest, a document submitted by advocacy organizations claimed inadequate care of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
