Fresh particulars have surfaced about the shocking deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and visual artist Michele Singer Reiner, whose remains were discovered at their Los Angeles home property on Sunday.
A source indicates citing a family associate, a massage therapist scheduled for an session first raised the alarm after not being able to enter the house. The therapist then reached out to the couple's daughter, Romy Reiner, who lives close by.
Upon entering the home, Romy found her father's body. Reports state she then left the home distraught, without knowing at that moment that her mother's body was there as well. Her roommate who had gone with her contacted 911. Afterward, paramedics discovered Michele Singer Reiner's body.
Authorities have charged the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, with the charges of murder in the first degree, as well as the charge related to a weapon, said to be a knife. He is currently in custody without bail.
The person close to the family challenged several earlier details. The source indicated that while Romy Reiner informed emergency responders that her brother Nick lived in a detached unit on the property, she did not identify him as a suspect at that juncture.
Furthermore pushed back against widely reported suggestions that Rob and Michele Singer Reiner had been especially "concerned" about Nick's behavior in the weeks leading up to the incident. Rather the family was "used to working through [Nick's] problems together."
This refutation also extends to reports of alleged "unpredictable" conduct by Nick at a event thrown by Conan O'Brien the evening prior to the discovery. While the source noted they were not in a position to confirm whether Rob had "rebuked" his son at the party, they asserted that suggestions of a "major confrontation" between the two were not correct.
As stated by law enforcement officials, the medical examiner had yet to determine as of Tuesday whether the Reiners died Saturday night or on Sunday. Some media reports suggested the condition of their bodies pointed to they had been deceased for a number of hours.
Nick Reiner was apprehended at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Sunday in the neighbourhood of Exposition Park, some 15 miles from the residence. He was set to appear in court on Tuesday, but his lawyer, Alan Jackson, stated his client had not received medical clearance and would not appear until Wednesday or later.
