The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by online forums.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
Given that the creative staff aren’t being guided by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“We have some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why mess with the classics?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
