Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
Design circles mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
