While perhaps not at the same level as pardoning holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miamiâs iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
âThis pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,â declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
âExcept perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,â the mayor added. âMay this pig enjoy a prosperous future away from worry.â
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the regionâs Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people yelling âsix sevenâ â deriving from a rap song lyric â often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named âsix-sevenâ its top term for the year.
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge âdistant from barbecues and spitsâ, according to the ceremony's official statement.
âThe annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,â said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
âIt represents the essence of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.â
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
