US Military Conducts Deadly Attack in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in Four Deaths

As stated by a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the US armed forces executed a lethal strike on a boat in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.

“A US joint task force carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no US military forces were injured.”

Context and Prior Strikes

This announcement follows a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, vowing to increase the military buildup.

Just on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Defends Tactics Amidst Pressure

The government has encountered increasing demands to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a successful operation, saying it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of legal military action.

Although the administration has said the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official appeared to suggest a broader political objective. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”

This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a push to oust Venezuela's current government.
